KovalevFilm was tasked with creating a video that would highlight the dedication, skill, and tradition involved in each pair of Dali shoes. The project was constrained by a tight timeline of 24 hours to travel, shoot, and return, requiring meticulous planning and execution. The final product was intended to be a visually compelling narrative for Penelope Chilvers’ website and social media platforms.

The Brief

Penelope Chilvers sought a visually rich and narrative-driven video to emphasise the artisanal craftsmanship of their Dali shoes. The goal was to feature the Spanish families who meticulously handcraft each pair, showcasing their generational expertise. The video needed to include interviews with the artisans and be enhanced with a voiceover from Penelope Chilvers herself to provide additional context and depth.

Approach

KovalevFilm's approach was designed to capture the essence of the Dali shoes through an authentic and intimate lens. The self-shooting director worked solo to document the shoemaking process and conduct interviews, emphasising the personal connection and traditional craftsmanship of the artisans. The video aimed to forge a deeper connection between the audience and the artisans by showcasing the detailed and passionate work involved in creating each pair of Dali shoes.

Production Process

Planning: Due to the constrained timeframe, meticulous planning was essential. This included arranging travel logistics, location setup, and scheduling interviews to ensure that everything was captured within the 24-hour window.

Filming: The self-shooting director traveled to Spain, where they filmed the shoemaking process and conducted two interviews with family artisans. These interviews provided personal insights into their craftsmanship and the tradition of shoe-making passed down through generations.
